Title: Burn

Disclaimer: Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and Elizabeth Swann are the property of the Mickey Mouse Club. Er, yeah. Not mine, in any case.
Pairing: Will/Elizabeth
Summary: Elizabeth experiences sunburn.
Word Count: 669

Proper women never went out into the sunlight long enough for their skin to freckle, let alone burn. Elizabeth had never before experienced this type of pain - it was pain she could not control, it was pain she could not avoid. It was pain every time she smiled or laughed or frowned. It was pain when she blinked and pain when she sneezed. Most proper women would never even know this pain existed. The skin on her nose felt tight, like she was wearing a mask of leather, unable to remove it. She felt itchy, but whenever she scratched she felt a new world of hurt wash over her.

It hardly mattered, as Elizabeth felt she could never call herself a "proper woman" in the strictest sense of the term. After all, a governor's daughter who ran away to join the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow and his band of merry men was not quite the girl one would see as proper at all. Foolish, yes, but never proper. Elizabeth Swann, however, was never meant to be proper in the first place. She had dreamt of pirates and gold and ships with black sails ever since she was a small child, and at the first chance to fulfill her dreams and live the life she'd always wanted, she had leapt for the opportunity.

Of course, her skin was not so eager to escape the confines of the governor's mansion. After two decades of being sheltered away from the blazing hot sun, being thrust into full daylight for hours at a time was not a simple change. Her skin had gone from a pale, milky white to a raw, bright pink. Elizabeth felt she'd blend in with the sunset if she could stand to be on deck with the sun out.

"You'll get used to it," Will had said to her, an amused sparkle in his eye. Clearly she had missed the joke, as had she felt nothing but the need for relief from the burning sensation on her forehead, cheeks, and nose. Earlier in the day as she had walked past the captain his long, tangled hair had brushed past her crimson shoulder and caused her to jerk quickly away, eliciting a comment from Sparrow.

"Elizabeth," he'd said, leaning back in his drunken, swaggering way and looking her up and down, "You're a bit redder than you were yesterday." He'd punctuated the remark with a limp-wristed point at her before turning away and resuming whatever it was that he'd been doing.

The quips did nothing to ease the pain, especially in Jack's case, as he was usually fairly humorous and would cause her to laugh and only created more pain. It would pass with time, she knew, but for now all she could do was try her hardest not to move. The worst part was clothing - she would walk around the ship stark naked if it weren't for all the eyes - cloth rubbed against her skin and kept up a continuous, nagging torture from the moment she put on her clothes in the morning to the moment she took them off in the evening.

She sat in her quarters, keeping herself fairly still, attempting to read a book. She turned her head slowly when the door opened, revealing Will Turner to her, holding a bucket of water and a rag.

"Am I to help clean in this condition?" she asked, clenching her jaw a bit. She did not want to shrug off her responsibility, but she felt that if she had to move once more she would throw herself over the gunwalls and into the sea.

"No, I'm here to ease your pain," Will replied, putting the bucket on the floor. He knelt beside it, soaked the rag in the water, and then wrung it out again. He then folded the damp cloth into a square and pressed it gently against Elizabeth's sun-scorched forehead. She sighed deeply, a pleasure-filled sound. For the first time in two days, she felt relief.

Pairing: None, really.
Summary: Draco Malfoy ponders the Gryffindor trio.
Word Count: 506

A quill, held in a steady, confident hand scratched across the gentle, bumpy texture of a piece of parchment rolled flat on top of a dining hall table. The notes there were choppy, as if the author were having a conversation while copying passages, paying more attention to parts of the text that happened to fall in the waning moments when one topic of conversation is exhausted and another begins. Smiles and laughter were passed across the table, musical notes dancing through the air like lazy snowflakes during the first snowfall of winter. The three people seated at the end of that dining table were laughing so hard that the redheaded one snorted, causing the messy-haired boy beside him to go into a fresh wave of hysterics.

As he watched, Draco could only dream that he would be able to have friends that would laugh with him, that would sit with him and focus on their schoolwork. He had friends, yes, but none of them had enough intelligence to be able to have the type of interaction that Hermione had with Harry and Ron. Every now and then he would watch Harry Potter and his friends and wish that he hadn't been so rude to them, that he hadn't immediately taken the token Slytherin stance against the wonderous Harry Potter. He often replayed that moment in Madame Malkin's, where he had first met Harry Potter, wondering if he would be there with Harry and his friends laughing away if he had been nicer about Hagrid.

He had always been intrigued the most not by Harry but by Hermione Granger. Her intelligence intrigued him more than anything else he had ever noticed about her - the way she held her books close to her chest when she walked, the way she tucked pieces of hair behind her ears when she studied, the way she tickled her own nose with the end of her quill when perusing texts in the library. He wished that he could one day sit down with her and just pick her brain, that he could join her in the library and talk with her for hours about divination and arithmancy and potions and transfiguration. She would never have it; she would turn him away with an incredulous look and would, without a doubt, go to Harry and Ron with the news that Draco Malfoy had gone insane. He had blown his chances to ever get on with them before he had even introduced himself to them.

It was too late to change things now, he knew; Harry, Ron, and Hermione would never allow them into their inner circle, their inside jokes. He would have to sit alone for the rest of his stay at Hogwarts, wondering what life would be like had he acted differently for those five minutes in Diagon Alley before their first year. Draco Malfoy would continue the next two years acting as he always did: pompous, arrogant, and uncaring. Inside he would always be haunted by the legendary Harry Potter.

"Here, Harry," Hermione mumbled, dropping a pile of books on the library table. "I think we might be able to start our research with these."

"Start?" Ron asked, incredulously. "Start? You mean finish twice, right?"

"No, Ron, I mean start."

"Bloody hell," muttered Ron, settling into his seat for a long weekend in the library. "Could we at least go to The Three Broomsticks for a butterbeer first?"

"No! We've put this off long enough!" Hermione insisted, giving him a very stern look. "We only have three weeks to do this project because you two have this idea that mediocrity is good enough."

"Hermione, please," Harry interjected, holding up a hand. Ron gave a smug smile, but it was quickly wiped off his face when Harry added "You too, Ron."

"I can't see why we can't just make up our divinations like we did before," Ron groused, pulling a piece of parchment from underneath the books Hermione had unceremoniously dropped on the table moments before. Harry did the same, and after a few moments of hesitant silence, Hermione sat down and joined them. For hours, they sat there, flipping through the books and taking notes. Every now and then, Ron would break the silence with a witty comment about something he'd found while reading, and the group would stray from the assignment. They would return to the task at hand just as quickly, however, because if they strayed too long, Hermoine would get upset and become snippy. Ron and Harry, as much as they hated her change in demeanor when it came to schoolwork, silently appreciated her efforts, as it had kept them near the top of their class for their entire stay at Hogwarts.

"I've got nothing left," Hermione stated, after they had toiled for nearly four hours. "I'll go get some more books."

"More books?" Ron whined. He turned to Harry, who was idly using his wand to move the hair from his eyes. "Harry, have you seen her notes? She could write a codex of her own!"

"I know, I know," Harry watched Hermione retreat into the sea of shelves that was the Hogwarts library. "Just humor her. You know how she is."

"I can't take it anymore, Harry, do something!" Ron leaned back in his chair, exhausted. They sat for a moment, basking in the silence of their short, workless break.

"Here she comes," Harry warned Ron as Hermione approached the table with a new stack of books. Ron sat up straight in his chair and pulled out a fresh piece of parchment. Suddenly, there was a large clatter, and Harry was out of his chair.

"Hermione!" Ron shouted, leaping from his own seat and joining Harry on the ground next to Hermione and the books that were now scattered all over the floor. "Hermione, are you--"

"I'm fine," Hermione replied. A wave of energy had swept through her body, and she felt a newfound power within her bones and all through her body. She felt her heart flutter with a rush of adrenaline. She sat back on her heels and brushed her thick, curly hair out of her face with a shaking hand.

"Hermione, your hand--"

"I'm fine," she replied. "I'm more than fine."

And as Hermione gathered her books and returned to her assignment, Sunnydale, California fell from the maps half a world away.
